Thursday 4-14-11

FYI - our Jet Blue flight B6303 arrives at 8:18 pm on Friday at the Long Beach Airport NOT 916 as originally detailed
---------------------------------

Our typical 10 pm "In your own room" was a little earlier when as we introduced ourselves to the 4th floor of the hotel we found that some rooms had regular visitors staying. We asked all to try and be quiet and they all did a great job of keeping the noise down.

Another exciting day ahead with a beautiful forecast: sunny with highs in low 70's - perfect

Itinerary: UVA, Monticello, road trip to Williamsburg, Colonial Williamsburg, Shields Tavern, Cry Witch

Shields Tavern

Fun fact: Ms. Drino's brother in-law is related to James Shields. We learned about a duel that Shields challenged Abe Lincoln to: Shields was upset that Lincoln spoke poorly about him in the newspaper and wanted a duel. The duel never came to a head because both men's advisors saw the height difference between the two and knew the severity of the results, phew.

We dined on fresh roasted turkey and mashed potatoes, while some were chosen to learn the proper art of dancing in the 1700's.

Wednesday 4-13-11

Thanks to the students who gave me pictures for today as my camera ran out of juice.

The big day- up this morning at 6 am, bags packed, breakfast for 50 and off to the White House, Jefferson memorial, WWII Memorial, Natural History Museum, American History museum, Ford's Theatre, Air and Space Museum, then off to Charlottesville and a new Hotel.

White House - no pictures allowed inside but we all enjoyed the tour. I think there was hope that given the good timing with other events we might see the President. No such luck.

"And one last thing..."

Next up lunch
Just after lunch we exited the building we found a street vendor selling some important items... ponchos, umbrellas, fake Louie Vitton purses etc. As soon as the kids found out that the prices were negotiable the game was on. I kept hearing things like"she asked me for 20 and I said 10 and she took it."Umbrellas sold for as little as 5, ponchos at 2 for 5.

Of course

Ford's Theatre

Some were a little tired from all the... walking?
